There's something special in just handful of athletes, like Tiger Woods, where the will to win and the ability to perform at peak level under max pressure was something they could do like nobody else. For example, Dominique Wilkins was my favorite player ever to watch, aside from maybe Magic Johnson, but Dominique could never get it done when the heat was on. I think he was more athletic than Jordan but he folded right at the point where Michael would thrive.
Even though I've lived 95% of my life in NC I've never taken to any of the big schools here. I graduated from UNCC so that's always been my school, but we've never really been good at any sport!
For the record, I'm ok with Wake Forest people but aside from that I pretty much hate the rest of the big NC schools equally. Well, hell, I went to ECU and WCU, but why waste time pulling for them? I mean, I do, but geezus man I want somebody to pull for! What am I supposed to do, just sit on the sidelines with no one to pull for? Anyway, just for the record, my mom (that's right my mom.........dad couldn't care less) got me hooked on the Heels. That was when I was just a little kid who had never thought about high school, much less college. That light blue was magic for me. The ACC used to be AWESOME in basketball. The ACC Tournament was a bloodbath. Only 1 team from the ACC could go to the NCAA Tournament, which was a big reason why UCLA won so many championships. I remember the old Big 4 Tournament, too, which was a pre-season tournament with UNC, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest duking it out. Those were the days! I hear ya, you're good people so I don't have a problem with you, it's just that I've been exposed to so many obnoxious Carolina and Duke fans my whole life it's really annoying. For the record, and I'm not just saying this to be nice to you, but the Dookie fans are about a billion times more obnoxious. Carolina fans always come off to me as obnoxiously smug, whereas Duke fans are just plain bad people who think they're superior to everybody else on the planet.

Carolina grads are obnoxiously smug. Duke fans are worse. UNC fans are flaming libs, too. I'm neither. I just like them in sports. As a kid, North Carolina seemed to say it all, Tar Heels is a cool, original name, and the uniform colors were awesome. I knew guys like you that hated their state schools. Knew a guy who grew up in Cullowhee that hates WCU and loves Appalachian State. I never understood where feeling that way came from, but it's all good.

I had a 600th Homerun baseball that I got when I attended my first game. Played the Cards with Lou Brock. That ball sat in my room until one day we needed a ball and that was that. Henry hit one that day, too. I was totally in awe from the moment I walked through the tunnel and saw that major league field below. I must have been 10 years old at the most. That's an experience a kid just doesn't forget.
Hank was my first sports hero. I loved him. I'll never forget how he would walk to the plate with his helmet and his bat in his hands. He would prop the bat between his legs while he put his helmet on. Never saw anybody do that before or since.

I used to try it every now and then and could barely swing.

That probably tells you what a great hitter the man was as much as anything else could. Amazing.......
