AUTiger7222 @autiger7222 15h Tonight was Will Smith's 47th game pitched this year. Out of those 47 games he's only had 18 that were clean outings (no baserunners allowed). So even when he isn't giving up runs it's still usually an adventure and that's why so many of us can't stand Will Smith. I'm still pissed at Will Smith You should be.. He was ahead 0-2 and then walked a guy... Threw a terrible first pitch to Zimmerman even as the announcers said be careful on the 1st pitch, and then threw an even worse pitch to and gave up a game losing HR to a .086 hitter.. It was a horrible pitching performance.

Because he had only had 35 ABs in the big leagues. And only had 3 hits before his blast on the soft toss 83 mph meatball curveball in the middle of the plate from Smith.

Well if you want to get all technical.

Serious question. On what basis did AA provide Will Smith with such a nice contract? Spin rate? Georgia boy? I really don't get it. I thought last year was maybe because of the COVID bout and the short season, but it's obvious that he just isn't that good. He's a guy who should be bullpen filler at a couple million per year, not a closer with a $40 million contract. That is a great question and based on how AA does business in FA since he has been here I will try to come up with some reason. It seems like if he really wants that one specific player he will go all out early in FA and get his man. I think he has outbid himself and maybe been impatient with signs. Looking at the record, he strikes what seems to be high and early. We saw the Donaldson sign for 23 mil after an injury plagued yr early in FA that off season. We as a group questioned that at the time. We did well on that though. Then, the next yr, we saw him get Smith early for what was a surprising 3/40 deal very early. Now this was after an excellent season in SF and he did have a prior record of being a good pitcher in prior yrs, some closing others not closing. So he targeted his man And this off season - early in - come on did anyone in the industry think that Drew Smyly would get an 11 mil deal. That is one that I really think he outbid vs himself. And even Morton who has been very good, did the industry experts expect a 15 mil for him from last yr. Now, the Morton deal has been good and I would love to have him back for two more yrs. So, my guess is Will Smith was AA's target for that off season and he pushed to get that deal done early cause he wanted his man. No one would argue he overpaid given the results - and to a point I am not a Will Smith basher given the raw numbers. But these gross meltdowns - this is where most of us do not trust him as the stopper and it was not a good deal for the team. Will he do better next yr - I dunno.
