Dang I wish they would have done 4-6 years. I wonder what the money total is going to be. I'll bet he's pushing for $25M per year for lowering it to 3 years, but i would think even the Phaillies aren't stupid enough to do anything near that. 3 -- 75 mill.. plus a 3rd round pick.

You can always count on the Phaillies.

Short term commitment for the best available starting pitcher on the market? I didn't want Arietta for a Yu Darvish deal, but 3 years is a coup. That's less than the Cubs were even offering. This puts the Phillies in contention for the wild card. 25 million doesn't even dent the check book. They'll be shopping top tier next year while the Braves are looking for something in the defect bin.

That entire article's premise is that Arietta was seeking a "mega" contract. Considering Darvish just got 6 years 126m at age 31, only an imbecile would call 3 years at 25m per year a "mega" anything but a bargain. No one expects him to replicate his 2015 season but he's unquestionably a superior pitcher to anyone on the Braves roster. I think he'll do fine as a number 2 guy on the Phillies.

but he's unquestionably a superior pitcher to anyone on the Braves roster. lol, well congratulations there, given the age of our starting pitchers! He's also going to make more than the Braves entire pitching staff, bullpen included, and about 6 positional players combined. The point of the article is that Arrieta is regressing in every way possible. It will be a blast watching him flounder. I wouldn't be surprised to see his numbers back to where they were when he was with the Orioles. I'm looking forward especially to his mechanics going all to hell, like they did at times during the 2017 season. The man's a disaster waiting to happen. He steps about two feet to the right with his plant foot. Should be fun watching him trying to pull it all back together when he starts struggling. Couldn't happen to a more deserving team.

What a great GM the phollies have. LOL

Or...you know....less than Kazmir and McCarthy. Oh wait, that would mean that you had some idea who was actually on your team. My bad. I forgot I was talking to a Braves fan.

Yeah I did completely forget about those two guys because I don't expect them to be a vital part of our pitching this year. But at least they're both done after 2018, and if we get lucky and they pitch well we can trade one or both at the deadline. Probably not going to happen but it's not impossible.

Ya, there's no way the phollies are gonna wish they had $25 million extra to spend on a FA next year.

Ya, there's no way the phollies are gonna wish they had $25 million extra to spend on a FA next year. There actually isn't. I've mentioned this multiple times already, but the Phillies are 30 million dollars under the Braves payroll in 2018 even after the Arietta signing. That's the advantage of actually having young talent playing for your team instead of fossils like Nick Markakis.

Yeah but isn't next year actually..next year? 2019? When those old fossils like Markakis and several others all see their money come off the books?
If I'm not mistaken, what TNMC said was "next year"..2019, when the FA crop is much better and the Braves see millions and millions of dollars become available while the Phaillies will still be paying that $25mm to Arieta.

Ok.....and my response is exactly the same for 2019. The Phillies have 42M committed to 2019, an extremely lucrative tv deal and an owner worth upwards of 6 billion dollars. Their payroll can easily jump to 200million. If you think 25M for a very good starter in Arietta has any impact on the Phillies ability to pursue the top tier free agents, you aren't paying very close attention. I'd be way more worried about burning 11 million dollars on a dumpster fire like Julio Teheran next season.
