I believe their prowess at certain martial arts is definitely exaggerated. Then again though I try and be open minded and understand things like if I throw a kick at an AAU Tai Kwon Do tourny, the opponent can’t grab my leg and hang onto it. Being a weird mixture of styles is the cause of several things you mentioned, but I definitely roll my eyes a bit at some of the MA accolades attributed to these guys. The more I watch the more I am convinced Ralph Macchio could slap these guys around.

Wow.
Color me OUTCLASSED.
I'm a stocky (fat) old guy that still lifts weights but I'm about as flexible and skilled as a block of Medium Cheddar.
And I should be scolded for (still) liking Steven Seagal movies and all of his drama....I still think he is/was a badass amidst all of the Interweb rumors/stories/bullchit/reality.
You guys sound like you know what you're doing....kudos to you for your discipline and skill.
Oh, and Hagler beat Sugar Ray.
Discuss.

I thought I was the only one who still liked Steven and I'll watch his movies any time. He is bad ass mixed with some great hokey moments on and off screen. He kind of reminds me of Bill Shatner that way.
"Oh, and Hagler beat Sugar Ray."
haha that old debate, a classic but I tend to agree with you

Okay.. since we brought up Steven Seagal..
Amazon Prime had a series this past year called Jean Claude Van-Johnson,
Starring of course JCVD, The premise was that all of Van-Damme’s movies were actually covers for his missions as a CIA like special agent. Now after many years of semi-retirement, he returned to the agency and of course went back into the cover of being a B-movie star.
It took a couplenof episodes to get going, but it was bloody fantastic. It explored some real emotional stuff, while managing to be bring back the campyness of his films but still have a solid overall story-arc.
I kid you not... the acting was very solid by everyone involved. Sadly it was cancelled after the 1st season, but it really was great.

I never was a fan of his but the movie "JCVD" is pretty cool and something different

This particular show was great. He really deconstructed himself with a lot of self-deprecating humor.
There was also a bit of real life sadness to it if you know much about his personal struggles.
It totally changed my thoughts about him.

It totally changed my thoughts about him. Very interesting, the more you talk about it the more I think of the movie JCVD(2008) and wonder if it's based on that. I should have said it was his movies I didn't like not him and the movie JCVD made me like him as a person. That was actually the reason I went back on checked out his movies again but for me they are horrible with no redeeming parts. So I guess you could say I want to like his movies but can't. I can't even grasp who they were made for or what the target audience is supposed to be. The last one I tried was Kickboxer and it was just a drag in every way. At least with Stevie you got 50 % cheese mixed with bad ass scenes..you can enjoy the B movie feel. I can enjoy the cheapest of the cheap martial arts flics. But Kickboxer felt like one of those dry soap opery movies off Hallmark....it has that exact same feel, it was quite bizarre trying to even guess at what they were going for. Then add in the lame training scenes of his showing of his ass and the splits. The horrible end fight where it's all slow motion cut scenes, odd music. It's just one of those things I can't see anyone liking ....I dunno just a weird flat experience and I've watch 1000's of cheap martial arts films. If you like that show you should check out the JCVD movie though.

the fighting looks more like something you would see in an Airplane type spoof movie esp those leg close ups on kicks

www.imdb.com/title/tt1899353/ This movie is pretty good if you just want to watch some bone crunching martial arts with minimal plot. The sequel I thought was even better as it started to fill in a plot with the same great fights and there is a third part coming soon. The director isn't half bad either..he has a certain style esp in part 2.
