Second possible TJ surgery? Not good. Believe it or not, the human body is not built to rifle off an unlimited amount of 100 mph fastballs.. unless your name is Nolan Ryan or Aroldis Chapman. It is difficult to criticize someone as talented as Spencer for pitching the way he has, and you can’t really “blame” his coaches and organizations either. It’s just a crappy reality. One thing for sure though, this pre-emptive signing looks like it can blow up in our face.

Spencer Strider today underwent an MRI that revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Even if not torn, he's done for most of the season. Mark it down...

The union wants to blame the clock. I doubt that. It has more to do with guys pushing their bodies beyond their natural limits to maximize velocity. Only a few naturally throw this hard. Guys like Nolan Ryan and Vida Blue were born with it. It's always been rare, but programs like Top Velocity have changed that and are destroying pitchers in the process.

I do think the desire for velocity is a big part of the problem, but the other factor is limiting pitch counts and limited throwing between starts. I've heard that Mazonne had a program that had our pitchers throwing almost every day. Some of it was just soft toss and some medium effort tossing, but their arms were conditioned overall better than today's pitchers.

Those Braves teams had very few injuries. In fact, I don't recall Maddux or Glavine ever having a significant injury. Smoltz did, but they did not, IIRC.
